Lessons & Ratings (pg 1)

The club offers free lessons to members every quarter of the year. What is specifically offered depends on who volunteers to teach and what they want to teach. Lessons vary widely, from short 2 day weekend crash courses to classes that are 1 day a week for 2 months. We also have keelboat classes which are longer term, and specialty classes like catamaran, sailboard, and daysailor. Because we do all our own maintenance and repairs, we often have shop skills classes like fiberglass, engine repair, rope splicing, etc.

So what are ratings about? Well, ratings are something you earn for having a certain amount of knowledge, proficiency and demonstrating good judgement. Different ratings allow you to do different things. There are many different rating classes/levels. The club bylaws lays them out in detail. Generally you will start with a novice single-handed (1 person to a boat) or novice double-handed (2 persons to a boat) class. If you practice and do well, you will get a SH or DH novice rating out of the class. That is the starting place for most all club members.
