Text Box: Every major ocean has crossing records, documenting for the history books the finest yachts and crews which have sped across them.  These records commonly connect major ports.
As members of the WYC we believe that our Lake Washington deserves a benchmark crossing challenge as well, linking the main intellectual and cultural center of the pacific Northwest - the University of Washington - with the sprawling urban center of downtown Kirkland. This challenge is intended exclusively for WYC members to give them some direction in their endless quest to sail fast.
Rules
Start: between the red and green channel markers just off the outer dock
Finish: at the 8 mph buoy (white pin with orange rings) just north of the public docks at Kirkland
If you want you can go the other way too (Kirk2WAC)
Text Box: Timing: Time yourself. Use a stopwatch (waterproof :-)
Eligibility: Do it anytime you want on any WYC boat.

Compliance with WYC bylaws required. If you don't have a skipper rating, get a chief to come along.
Route
4.0 nautical miles (0.9 nm to Webster Point, 3.1 from Webster Point to Kirkland)
Course heading: 60 deg from Webster Point to Kirkland

Text Box: you can take out Laser's, Laser II's, Catamarans, FJ's, Bravo's, and more.  The only thing required to take these boats out in varying winds is the skills to do so, which you can attain by taking the clubs free class's, or Text Box: Sailing is typically regarded as a hobby for the rich.  This simply isn't true.  If you would like to sail, or learn out to sail, the membership fee is pretty much the only thing you have to pay for.  For $30 an academic quarter Text Box: learning on your own with supervision.  Taking guests (non-members) is no problem.  I would say that taking friends and/or family out on a boat is a far better time than the typical dinner/movie.  With the summer heat, many go Text Box: Are you up to the CHALLENGE?

to beaches to cool off, however upon getting to the beach, there is not much to do.  Sailing will give you something to do that is fun, exciting, and will get you wet.

The Hobie 16’s still don’t have a record, if you’re a Skipper that’s up to the challenge take one out the next time there’s a strong southern wind, as long as you survive to tell the tale you become the record holder.
