Windsurfer Ratings

Novice Windsurfer Rating

Where You Can Sail: Union Bay

When You Can Sail: Up to 7 knots of wind

Requirements:

  • To get a windsurfer novice rating you must pass the sailboard written test based on information in the New Member Guide and Daysailing Handbook.
  • Demonstrate good judgment for personal safety, the safety of others, and for the protection of club equipment.
  • You must also pass a practical test on the water. During the practical test you will be asked to:
    • Demonstrate proper checkout and check-in procedures
    • Demonstrate proper rigging and de-rigging technique
    • Demonstrate competent tacks and jibs in 5-7 knots of wind
    • Demonstrate self-rescue technique and proper use of safety equipment

Intermediate Windsurfer Rating

Where You Can Sail: Union Bay

When You Can Sail: Up to 15 knots of wind

Requirements:

  • Have met requirements for Novice rating
  • Consistently demonstrate good judgment for personal safety, the safety of others, and for the protection of club equipment.
  • You must also pass a practical test on the water. During the practical test you will be asked to:
    • Demonstrate proper board and rig selection for moderate wind conditions
    • Demonstrate proper sail rigging for moderate wind conditions
    • Demonstrate competent tacks and jibs in 10-15 knots of wind

Skipper Windsurfer Rating

Where You Can Sail: Union Bay and on Lake Washington between Evergreen Point Bridge and a line between Sand Point and Kirkland

When You Can Sail: No restrictions subject to hazardous weather rules

Requirements:

  • Have met requirements for Novice and Intermediate ratings
  • Consistently demonstrate good judgment for personal safety, the safety of others, and for the protection of club equipment.
  • You must also pass a practical test on the water. During the practical test you will be asked to:
    • Demonstrate proper board and rig selection for high wind conditions
    • Demonstrate proper sail rigging technique for high wind conditions
    • Demonstrate competent tacks and jibs in 15-20 knots of wind
